ncu – fruits

it has been a struggle to paint my nails recently. luckily i had a friend over a few nights ago and we had a mani party :) we may have been consuming adult beverages, so i give myself a pass if my idea is a) unoriginal and b) not done well.

if you don’t look too closely i actually really like them :) it was funny to choose watermelon as my fruit of choice because it’s probably one of my least favorite fruits (and my number one least favorite flavoring for anything!). but maybe it’s that half moon shape that made me think it would pair well with nails :)

26gnai – water

this was how i painted my nails when i went to hawaii! i knew i would be in the water (and at the beach) a lot, so what better way to fit in than with water nails ;)

i started with a gradient. easy-peasy. then came the part i’ve had trouble with before – the spritzy-water-marble look that i wanted to do a few weeks ago for the hippy/boho prompt (to make it look like turquoise).

one of my problems back then was that i didn’t own hairspray. which is probably a strange thing to say. but i don’t use it. my hair is super thin and straight and hairspray just doesn’t do much for me. but for the sake of my nails i went out and bought some – its outrageous that the 2.something ounce travel bottle is the same price as the 10 ounce full size bottle. so i have to choose between wasting money (sm btl) or wasting product (big btl). booo.

somehow i only took some photos of the final mani once i was on vacation. and then only with my gopro. which is cool because it’s water nails in the water, but not very focused or hi-res… oh well. i don’t even care because i was in hawaii!!

ncu - delicate print | @bulletnailsi love the way this mani turned out! i only wish i hadn’t used a peel off base coat – so it would have lasted longer!

i had originally tried to do a stamp. that’s the only way i can actually image something on my nails being a delicate print! i tried and failed. i can’t seem to get past the point of getting the polish from the stamp to my nail/silicone mat. i’ve tried with a ton of different polishes and it’s just too inconsistent. i’m super jealous of everyone who can do it, and because of them, i won’t give up! i’m sure after so many fails, i’ll eventually get the hang of it. right?

but out of my stamping failure came a glitter pen mandala to the rescue! i was inspired by sealemon’s mandala journal doodle and figured that was something i could handle.

i used my new favorite, useful-for-every-application pens from color technik and just started making patterns.

i really like the texture of the polish underneath. i’m always a fan of something a little different, and that texture is just enough to set this apart from the usual high-gloss.

once again i’m ho-hum about this prompt. i don’t know if my being uninspired is due to me (there’s a lot going on in my life right now) or the prompts.

either way, i don’t like this mani – but i took the time to do it, so figured i might as well post it. i had a hard time with bold color with yellow – because yellow is such a bold color. i typically like to pair it with muted or neutral colors (grey is my fave with yellow) so that the yellow is the bold color.

i thought purple would be good because it’s opposite on the color wheel. and i thought the chrome style would make it stand out more. it didn’t. i probably should have used the purple from my watercolor nails instead. oh well!

i’m getting back into painting my nails. i don’t know what it is, but i have just been uninspired the past few weeks. i have been very busy and i did go on vacation, but i’ve just been dreading the thought of having to paint my nails. i that’s part of the problem, that i feel i have to do it. but i also think i’m just uninspired by a lot of the prompts this year. when i read through the list i just wasn’t that excited about any of them… but i’m going to challenge myself to find a way to make them exciting. either by trying new stuff or being weird or whatever. we’ll see if that works ;)

this week’s prompt was watercolor nails. i have seen this technique done quite a few times and it’s always pretty nice, but i’ve never tried it myself. it’s not hard, but it definitely took me a bit to get the hang of it.

if you don’t know, to do this style, all you do is put a drop of paint on your nail then use nail polish remover / acetone on a brush to thin in out and spread it around. here’s a good video to see what i mean. i found that the more liquid you use the better it works. i was worried that the acetone would just take all the color off and i would be left with nothing on my nail so i didn’t use much at first. but the dryer my brush was, the more i was just daubing the paint around rather than it spreading out on it’s own like watercolor.

notice the purple in the above photo – that was the first color i did. i feel like you can see that i sort of just pushed the color around (look at the middle finger and thumb especially). you’ll also notice how bright and vivid the colors are. that does not say watercolor (to me at least). i used bright colors thinking that a lot of the color was going to disappear once i added the acetone. well, yes and no. the purple we’ve already mentioned, but even the pink and yellow, as i started to get the way of it, still didn’t lighten up that much. i don’t know if i still wasn’t doing it right or if it’s the colors of the polish i used are too bright or too pigmented. but don’t worry – i had a solution!

i just painted over them with a fairly transparent sparkly white. and voilà! watercolor colors ;)

RuPolished – Snatch Game

halleloo i’m back. i have had naked nails for the past two weeks while i’ve been on vacation and then working 14 hours days. sometimes you just don’t have time for the upkeep…

this week’s drag race was snatch game. something we do every season, and every season at least one girl still seems surprised she has to do an impression. anyway, there were definitely some stand-outs, both in the good category and the bad. obviously the best was alexis – girl had liza down pat!

on to the runway: “night of 1000 madonna’s, part II” – except we gotta minus a few because somehow there were still repeats!

how has no one done either of these classic 80’s looks? they’re still what i picture in my head when i think of madonna. maybe everyone figures someone else is going to do it so they pick something else? i feel like after the kimono-no-no that if i were told there was going to be a madonna challenge i would bring two outfits.

anyway, even though there were repeats there were some great looks. farrah’s was amazing and trinity looked great but when valentina walked out on stage i just died. i lived! and then i died. i thought it was a clever, beautiful, tongue-in-cheek choice and she was serving that body-ody-ody.

so that’s the outfit i chose for my nails. one because it super simple and that is my favorite thing ever. two because it was so smart. and three because i’ve lived with naked nails for the past two weeks – of course they’d get censored sooner or later ;)
