ncu – neon

this past weekend was pride here in sf. it was very easy working some neon into my mani to fit in!

did one hand stripey, like the lgbtq flag. (you can see i added glitter from the first pic to this one. obviously it wasn’t done until there was glitter!)

ncu – anti-valentine

he loves me… he loves me not…

that’s the theme of my “anti-valentine’s” prompt today. i don’t love valentine’s day, but i also don’t hate it. like most other holidays in my life i’m indifferent to it (holidays really only get my approval if i get the day off of work and/or get to dress up!). so when thinking of what to paint i did some google searching. there’s a lot of valentine’s day hate out there! dang. a lot of it is broken hearts and taking-back-the-day-from-corporate-greed-mongers-who-are-guilting-people-into-sales-based-on-chocolatey-professions-of-love-all-while-alienating-single-people.

valentine’s day is doing the most!

so i thought of something that is still cute but could potentially be anti: the hope of true love through divine intervention and plucking of flower petals. so each of my fingers is less one flower petal. and just like when doing this in real life the outcome is based on where you start and where you end. is first plucked petal a “he loves me” or a “he loves me not”? so this could either be a manicure in favor of valentines day or against. ;)

ncu - anti-valentine | @bulletnails

for the mani itself i started with one of my favorite sparkly holo’s as a base coat and on my silcone mat did a gradient from yellow to orange. when that dried i cut it up (above pic) and glued them on to my nails. i should have tried to alternate the colors more, but i thought the layering would make each petal stand out more than it did.

26gnai – red and pink

it’s way too early for valentine’s, although try telling that to target etc! but when i see red and pink together i can’t help but think of valentines. it’s the only reason i combine the two. so i got a bit of early valentine’s celebration in today with this mani.

26gnai - red & pink | @bulletnails

i really like how this turned out – it’s a cute simple pattern that was pretty easy to do. i started with the base coat of gold + glitter on three fingers, hoping to make it not too overwhelmingly red and pink.

then i made two rows of double dots, one pink one red and connected them with a little triangle of the same color with a small paint brush. i did my thumb first and learned the spacing, therefore like my ring and pinky fingers a lot better ;)

26gnai - red & pink | @bulletnails

i’ve also gotten in the habit of painting my “painting” hand with something that matches but is not as fancy, just so that while i’m wearing it throughout the week it matches when people see my hands. mostly i’ve just used the same base coat as my fancier design.

26gnai - red & pink | @bulletnails

this is what my right / “painting” hand looks like this week. this would have been cute for the challenge too actually. i haven’t been posting pics of this other hand because they’re not as interesting, but i thought it’d be fun to share that this is what i do – instead of leaving it blank or painting it some random way or spending a ton of time and energy to make it look the same (except worse because as ambidextrous as i may be, i’m still much better as this with my right hand).

26gnai - red & pink | @bulletnails

to be honest, the reason i showed my right hand was to give context to this photo. i’m so in love with this perfect tiny little heart that i managed to make on my thumb!

ncu – ugly sweater

i had an “ugly christmas sweater” party a few weekends ago. i was really pumped to make my own sweater. i bought a bunch of gaudy stuff from michael’s and was ready to go to town and make this the most ridiculous sweater ever. but then i guess my designer brain took over. i made the sweater while watching christmas movies, only half paying attention to each task. once a few hours had gone by and i had glued so many sequins i could no longer see straight, i took a look at my “ugly” sweater and it was way to orderly and kinda cute! dangit! i guess that’s the designer in me – i can’t seem to make things ugly ;)

so my nails ended up not-so-ugly to match my not-so-ugly sweater! very simple, as usual, but i just tried to get the basics of my sweater onto my nails.

ncu - ugly sweater | @bulletnails

ncu - ugly sweater | @bulletnails

i really love the plaid ribbon accent nail. i used a peel off base coat like modge podge (it’s practically just elmer’s glue anyway). i applied the base coat and stuck a piece of ribbon on while wet. then did another coat right over the top. once it dried i trimmed it up and applied a top coat. and voila – holiday ribbon nail art :) and it’s so cute close up!!

26gnai – pastel christmas

i think today is proof that i should give up on stamping. i just can’t seem to figure out the technique! i want to be able to do it so bad, but i never seem to have any success. plus this happened:

stamper woes @bulletnails

i don’t even know how! it happened before i even started stamping – so i can’t blame my she-hulk super strength on anger and frustration! this is also the first time i even used my cute clear stamper. womp womp.

anyway, i had the thought of doing christmas presents for my pastel theme. i wanted something matchey yet knew i was going to do skittles so nothing too complicated. i used one pastel color per nail. then did a silver stamp print to represent different wrapping papers. then added a matching neon color on top as ribbon.

26gnai - pastel christmas | @bulletnails

i like how they look. the only thing i would change if i could is my stamping skills ;) and to have mixed the yellow with white to make it more pastel. once i put the neon yellow on top as ribbon, it didn’t even show up so i had to paint over it with white :)

ncu – candy cane

i did not go with my first instinct on this one. the first thing i think of when i hear the words candy cane is the movie joy ride. it’s such a great movie ;) and so freaking creepy! i really wanted to do something with that movie as my manicure today. but anything i could think of was way too complex for me to deal with right now (or ever). my ideas were the two-way radio, a guy missing his jaw, a semi-truck, a cornfield, paul walker and steve zahn’s butts…

but alas, without being able to do it justice, i decided to go with the more obvious interpretation of candy cane.

but to keep it weird – i tried to make it look like a candy cane that had been sucked on for a while. it’s not as clean as i would like, but i still think the concept is fun :) i painted stripes to match a giant 2lb. candy cane i have at home and then brushed and sponged on the base color again over the tips.

26gnai – christmas preparations

this one was easy! the thing i dread most about getting out my christmas decorations are the tangled mess of lights! no matter how careful i am when putting them away, when it comes time to pull them out they’re in one giant knot. i think i have mischievous little elves that come in and tangle them just to test my christmas cheer ;)

26gnai - holiday preparations | @bulletnails

i don’t put up much decorations for christmas so fortunately i don’t get too stressed about de-balling the lights. there’s no tree or anything anymore, i just can’t justify storing a fake tree for 10 months just to have it out for two. but my first year in san francisco was the first year i ever got a real tree. it was beautiful and smelled great and i never wanted to take it down. but then i waited too long and the people who pop around and pick up all the trees from the curb stopped coming around. so i got a friend with a hand saw and we chopped my tree up into little bits that we threw out the window and stuffed into my (and my neighbors’) compost bin. that was a huge ordeal that i haven’t been looking forward to repeating. so this year i have planned to make a christmas tree silhouette out of poster board to put in my window. i’ve done something similar for halloween but thought it’d be cute as a tree with little lights on it. i’m hoping to get it done this weekend! if not it might be too late to bother…

the dots/lights on my nails were made with a dotting tool. then i painted in some quick lines to represent the cord (always in dark green!). i went over some of the dots again then put a dab of glow in the dark polish on each and voilà – christmas light nails. i don’t have any pics of the glow in the dark – i have never figured out the trick to photographing that, plus the dots of light are pretty small so even in real life are hard to see. but i know they glow and thats really all that matters!

ncu – holiday movie

i’m a little late with this one because i went home for a week and a half over thanksgiving to see my family. it was a really nice vacation (cold – but i just stayed inside!).

this mani is inspired by i’ll be home for christmas. probably a not-so-famous christmas movie for most people. but i watched this so many times growing up, probably because i had a huge crush on jonathan taylor thomas! but now it’s part of my christmas tradition.

ncu - holiday movie | @bulletnails

i have always loved the scene with the santa 5k. as a kid that was such a wild idea, to see all these different santas running around the city. now that i live in sf, where there is an annual santacon, i miss the idyllic (and sober) version from the movie.

ncu - holiday movie | @bulletnails

since i ran out of time i decided that my nails would just be ten little santa hats – i guess sort of clustered like they are in the movie…

galaxy all the things!

this past weekend was halloween and dia de los muertos – my two favorite holidays (why are they within 3 days of each other?!) i didn’t really do much for either this year, but i got dressed up :) at work on friday, i wore this super cute tardis dress. i’ve had it for a while but i haven’t worn it yet (the tulle makes me feel like i’m going to prom and the design, while super cute, doesn’t scream everyday wear). to finish the look i galaxied my nails and some $5 goodwill shoes :)

i used the same nail polish to do the shoes that i used for my nails. goodwill is great for stuff like this – i had no idea how the nail polish would react with the material of the shoes and didn’t want to ruin any good shoes. but they turned out so great! i’m going to wear them on the regular now, well as regular as i wear any heels (which is hardly ever).

img_1638

they’re just so cute! i’m curious how they’ll hold up in the long run. i had no problems wearing them around all day, no chipping or flaking off. hopefully that’s a good sign :)

and then right after halloween was dia de los muertos. i didn’t go out but i did a galaxy sugar skull face paint. i really like it – i couldn’t get the colors to show up as well on my face as they do on my nails (and the shoes) though.

i think the pictures wash the colors out more than in real life, but it’s okay because i had fun doing it. even though i didn’t go out to celebrate i really wanted to feel connected to the holiday and spending some time on artwork was a good way to do it. although, it’s an interesting experience to work on your makeup for 2-3 hours and then hop in the shower and wash it all off.

26gnai – halloween in the wrong colors

i’m struggling with feeling excited about any of the prompts this round. they’re just not speaking to me. they’re not inspiring me. like this one. “halloween in the wrong colors.” what are the wrong colors? i feel like halloween is the holiday with the least strict color code to start with (sure orange and black, but yellow, purple, green, dark blue etc are all typical too). it’s not like christmas (red green and maybe white), valentine’s day (red/pink) or fourth of july (red white and blue) etc.

so instead of exploding my brain trying to think of what to do, i decided to choose a recognizable halloween character and do my typical simplification to it. oh and make it the wrong colors. in this case – the opposite colors…

26gnai - halloween | @bulletnails

i chose the bride of frankenstein. i love her hair! i’ve wanted to be bride of frankenstein for halloween for a white, but i haven’t done it because i want to do it right! and lately i tend to procrastinate around halloween time. maybe next year…

26gnai - halloween | @bulletnails

i did my other hand in the correct colors – so that people at work or whatever might have a chance to actually guess what the design is.

40 Great Nail Art Ideas – Christmas

merry christmas from a galaxy far far away. today’s crumpets prompt is christmas. but it’s also the release of one of the galaxy’s most awaited movies: star wars! now, don’t get mad, but i have never seen any of these movies. at first it was just an i-didn’t-grow-up-in-a-household-that-watched-that-kind-of-thing thing. but after a while it was a the-series-is-too-far-in-to-get-started-now sort of thing. now it’s a i-like-seeing-the-look-on-people’s-faces-when-i-tell-them kind of thing. people have tried to make me watch them, some have even tried trickery. it’s not that i think they’re gonna be bad (although i do worry about the hype!) it’s just that i don’t really care…

40gnai - star wars christmas | @bulletnails

but all that aside, i do know a lot of people do care. the fact that every movie theater around me’s opening night showing has been sold out for over a month now, is quite an indicator of the obsession. and it’s a little contagious. i was almost a stormtrooper for halloween. and now this.

40gnai - star wars christmas | @bulletnailsi’ve seen a few star wars manicures (the stormtrooper is inspired by this cute one) but i thought it would be so cute to have them all dressed up for the holidays! so i have the opening crawl (you know, the words going off into space that starts each movie) on my thumb, c3po, a stormtrooper, r2d2 and some lightsabers.

the only finger that turned out how i imagined it is r2d2. i like the straight lines – those i can handle. the others are messier than i would like. i guess i still haven’t gotten the hang of painting small details with nail polish. i know a lot of people use acrylics and stuff, but that 1. seems kinda like cheating and 2. means a whole extra set of supplies that i would have to find a home for. so i guess that means i’m going to keep fighting with the polish until i can conquer it, so maybe forever!

40gnai - star wars christmas | @bulletnails

if you notice on my right hand the santa hat is just polish, but on my left (in the second pic) i used a little bit of cotton to make the hat fluffy. it’s a fun 3d addition, but i have a feeling it’s going to drive me crazy and get removed pretty fast!

40 Great Nail Art Ideas – Winter

this week’s crumpets nail tarts prompt was winter. living in california i don’t get much winter (which is why i moved out here) but one thing i do miss is the gorgeous icicles that would form every year.

40gnai - winter | @bulletnails

i’ve also been really wanting to try the shattered glass manicure that i’ve seen around a few times. so i figured what better time to try it out!

40gnai - winter | @bulletnailsi looked up a bunch of tutorials and decided i needed cellophane. but everywhere that i found it it was just clear – none of the iridescence that makes this such a cool look. finally i found some small gift bags that had the right look, even if they were a little opaque for my needs. after cutting them into shards, i used essie garden variety as a base with spoiled black mamba as an accent on my ring finger. i used my clear gel topcoat as a glue to lay the cut pieces in. i repeated this one more time for variation and finished with like 10 more layers of gel to get rid of the roughness and sharp points that i knew would catch on everything!

40gnai - winter | @bulletnails

someone at work mentioned that these looked like the movie frozen. i have such a love/hate relationship with that movie (it was a good movie – i will 100% give it that, but i can’t stand how crazy everyone is about it – it was just a movie after all), but it is supposed to look wintery and frozen is all about winter – so i’d say that’s a win ;)

40gnai - winter | @bulletnailsif i were to do this again i would cut the pieces into smaller triangles. one of the difficulties i had was, on all but my thumb, my fingernails are very curved so the long strips of “glass” wouldn’t wrap around the nail. they wanted to be flat. i kept having to use tweezers while curing to hold down the ends so they would harden correctly.

take a look at all the other wonderfully cold manicures here:

dia de los muertos

my second favorite holiday of the year comes just two days after my first. dia de los muertos is such a rich, spiritual, fun holiday. there’s parties, face painting and booze, but also remembrance, honor and respect.

muertos

as if all that weren’t enough, this is also the origin of the sugar skull – one of my favorite things (my house is full of them!). i typically attend the festivities, and usually paint my face. this year my nails are also in the spirit (haha get it – spirit – because of the spirits).

muertos

this year i have a skull half mask that i’m probably going to wear to the parade because i have to work and won’t have time to paint my face. :( my friend and her hubby and baby will be going with me though – so i’m excited to see if they paint their faces – especially the little one. he’s just old enough that he might sit still for it.

halloween part 4

hocus-pocus-movie-poster-1619i’m back with another halloween manicure (also the theme this week for crumpets 40). this one is based on my favorite halloween movie: hocus pocus. besides being an awesome halloween movie, this was the first movie i ever saw in the theaters without my parents! that was 22 years ago! i kinda don’t even believe that. (imdb won’t let me live in denial thought).

so my manicure is the wonderful sandersen sisters: sarah, winifred and mary as well as their spell book and the full moon / movie cover.

as much as i love this manicure – this is the only picture i have of it. unfortunately when i put the top coat on it completely smeared the paint. i don’t ever do this, but the photo above had to have some extensive photoshopping to save it. luckily most of the streaks were on their faces which were plain anyway and could easily be removed. a lot of it was from their lips – i don’t know if it’s the red i used or what.

imgresalso the words hocus pocus were definitely not on my nails – that’s just a little embellishment i did while editing the photo. i had wanted to write it on but there was no way i could do it small enough. and i’m too picky to not have had it in the correct typeface anyway!

colors used: most were mixtures (ie all their lips used the same base with another mixed in to give similarity but not sameness), essie cocktails & coconuts, sally hansen mellow yellow, essie partners in crime, essie lots of lux, and wet n wild red red.

halloween part 3

tincturescan you tell yet that i love halloween? today’s manicure was inspired by my halloween party bar from last year. i had decorated all the alcohol bottles with fun witchy / spooky / halloween labels. it was so cute! some of the bottles are actually still decorated like this (some partly because i no longer remember what alcohol is in the bottle!). for my mani i found some cute designs on etsy and made some nail stickers using my trusty temporary tattoo paper.

tinctures

i had to squeeze and squish the designs a lot to fit on my nails. they’re pretty small, but not entirely unreadable. i tried to focus on fitting and centering the the image, then the title and then whatever else fit.

tincturestincturesi started with a coat of spoiled i’m so jaded and added brush strokes of kbshimmer pt. young thing. then a few coats of wet n wild glo’ money, glo’ problems glow in the dark polish. and finally the temp tattoos. my nails look really cool in the dark – but i have not figured out how to capture them on camera! i read a few blogs about photographing glow in the dark manicures, but it just seems like no matter what i do, i just get black or at the most, blurry photos (ie image below).

tinctures

you can kinda see here that the tattoos do a nice job of blacking out part of the glow so the design is just as cool in the dark as it is in the light (sorry but you might have to use your imagination!!).

i like these. the tattoo paper is aways nice to be able to do complex designs in a small space and not to have to spend an inordinate amount of time. if i were to do these again the only thing i would do different would be to use a more parchment-y color scheme than the green and silver.

halloween part 2

so i’ve moved on from my rant about women’s halloween costumes. i’m not over it, i’m just over thinking about it. i found my costume for this year and it’s really fun. i found a super cool demon mask online and have based my costume around that. i was just researching colored contacts – i would love to do the black out ones. two problems arose: 1: price. the regular black out lenses are $28 and the ones that black out the entire eye are $256!!!!! dang. they’re so cool though. problem 2: i already wear contacts. i had a pair in my cart before i realized that i couldn’t even were them! unless i wore glasses. i don’t think a demon with glasses is a very scary thought ;)

halloween part 1

halloween is my favorite holiday. when i was little my mom always made my sister and my costumes. there were some good ones in there. there were some that went all the way through my nieces and if my mom has her way will probably go to my grand-niece too! our costumes were always so cute and wholesome. i’ve been raggedy anne, a clown. one year i was catwoman. that one was awesome – i had really long press on nails / claws and i was all in black with a mask. nevermind that the all black outfit was probably a sweatsuit and the stitching on it was done in fabric marker. i felt awesome.

now as an adult i try to continue in the tradition of hand-made costumes. both for nostalgia (and my wallet)’s sake as well as the fact that all (most) of the pre-packaged costumes for ladies are disgusting. examples: sexy nurse, sexy dorothy, sexy toto (okay i don’t know if that’s a real thing but scooby doo is), sexy pig, sexy shark attack victimsexy squirrel, and sexy pizza rat.

anyway, there will be more halloween posts so i’ll continue my rants later on – let’s get to the nails!

mummies

for my first halloween manicure of the season i decided to try one of the new techniques i learned during the year. sugar spun nails are fun and quirky and fairly easy. this manicure in my head was a little different than it turned out on my nails. i was hoping to get the strings thicker to look more like gauze wrapping but i got a lot of really thin strings. i still think it turned out okay – i just ended up going over my nails more times to make up for it.

mummiescolors used: spoiled visually slimming, wet n wild french white crème, revlon matte top coat, pop ablaze, and wet n wild glo’ money, glo’ problems.

the problem with thick sugar spun polish is that it takes for-eh-ver to dry. and you end up with the photo below…

mummies

i had to repaint these two nails because when i hopped in the shower a few hours after doing my mummies the paint just smeared all over. heading for bed and working in the morning, i didn’t have much choice other than to clean off the polish and just do two accent nails (but only on one hand!).

31dc: day twenty eight: inspired by a flag

good morning!! boy, am i ahead of my time! i’ve had these nails done for a little while now (i went to vegas for a few days and cheated on my nail challenge – did multiple mani’s for a few days to get ahead). my real purpose was to have my rainbow flag for PRIDE this weekend. and lo and behold – the supreme court ruling came out while i was wearing these. i let everyone think that i had done it especially for that ;)

31dc flagbut luck just happened to give me the flag prompt during pride month, and on the same day as the san francisco pride parade. and now with gay marriage legal this is the most perfect manicure EVAR!

so as i said i went to vegas with these bad boys – i love how they look in the sun – so sparkly! they did struggle to keep up with my hours in the swimming pool though. i thought the temporary tattoo paper with a gel top coat would be enough to keep them in tip top shape for a while. but sadly that is not the case.

31dc flag

this picture (yay sun and palm trees) was taken only two days after application. womp womp. today looks even worse (i won’t subject you to a picture of them now). but this is my constant struggle with my nails, when not doing a manicure a day challenge i want the designs that i do to last a while. the gel top coat definitely helps but i wish it was more like at the salon. my friends who get their nails did don’t seem to have to mess with them for weeks and they still look good (besides the signs of growth).

christmas lights

this was another inspired manicure. this one came from copy cat claws. she definitely found better “lights” than i did – mine sort of took over my entire finger after only a few were attached. they also feel really weird. i haven’t really done anything more than polish before so the fact that they stick out and are bumpy is strange to get used to. i superglued the colored stones down and then gel top-coated my nails a few times to make sure they will stick. we’ll see how well they hold up.

hohoho

merry christmas. i’m really into the holiday designs right now! there are so many i want to try out, but i don’t have much time to paint them. so my secret trick (shh don’t tell anyone) is that i’m painting both hands different designs! genius. this way i get to admire my handiwork for at least a few days and i can try out all the fun looks that i want.

halloween

it may be a little early (or maybe not), but halloween is one of my favorite holidays. to get a jump start on the halloween season, and hopefully get inspired for a costume and decorations, i did my nails in a halloween theme tonight. there were a few different designs i wanted to try out so i just decided to do all of them!

halloween_2

this is the base coat for each nail. you’ll notice the index finger changed for the final pic – i had originally painted this with glow in the dark cat eyes on top. i had to do too many layers for the orange/yellow to show up and it just smeared all over the place. so i redid those two.

halloween_3speaking of smearing: this pic is what happens when you don’t use the bathroom before you start a nail project. manicures are like long road trips with little kids: you need to make sure everyone has used the potty before starting that journey!

halloween_4this one is probably my favorite. i was hesitant about how it was going to work out (or if it will stay for very long) but i like the end result. frankenstein’s monster is so iconic i knew i could get away with just the color, hair and bolts. the boltsare what caught me though. i started out just painting them on, but they didn’t stand out (literally!). so i went into my crafty supplies and found some clear/silver seed beads. i broke them in half with wire cutters (some just shattered into dust) and stuck it into the uncured gel polish. i set that, then painted over with the silver to make it really stand out and did one more gel coat – hopefully locking the beads in for at least a few days.

halloween_5lastly here’s another look at the results. i painted the pumpkin face onto one of my nail stamps so i could have a bit more control, especially with my left hand. and that made it a lot easier. if i messed up i could just scrape it off and not worry too much. yay.

champagne2happy almost new years! this is my going-out polish. i have a few parties in the next few days and i’m really excited for 2014 :) to celebrate all the champagne that i plan on drinking i painted my nails to look like little bubbly drinks. i had to hunt around a bit to find a good champagne colored polish – all the ones that i own and found in stores were too gold. i think this ended up being a good color for it. i used two different glitters to make the bubbles, a small one for the bubbles up the center and a larger one just at the tip.

champagne glass midi ring

haha and here’s a little ring that i made for the occasion. (this is cute but the worst ring idea ever. it kept getting caught on everything!)

candy canes

i tried to do something christmasy without being super obvious. but i wish i had been more literal with this one. i wanted it to look like the candy cane stripes were continuing from finger to finger but they’re just too big. i probably needed 3 stripes per finger for it to easily read as candy canes. oh well, there’s always next year.
