31dc: day twenty nine: inspired by (the) supernatural

supernatural is one of my favorite tv shows. it has perhaps jumped the shark but i still won’t miss an episode. with 218 episodes and counting, there’s no way i could hear the word supernatural and not think of this great show.

31dc supernaturalif you don’t watch the show all of these nails will be the most random things for you. but if you do watch – hopefully i’ve done all of these things justice! on my right hand i’ve got the mark of cain, PIE!, fire and rock salt, the license plate from the impala, and the angel banishing sigil (does this have a name?). my left hand is the anti-possession tattoo, cas (and his super awesome angel wings), and dean’s amulet.

31dc supernaturalthe rock salt is actually table salt – this came off almost immediately after taking the picture. but that’s okay – i didn’t really intend it to stay. i think my favorite of this manicure is cas and his angel wings. when planning out this design, this was the only thing i knew for sure i was going to do. i used the sugar spun trick that i did for yesterday’s “inspired by a tutorial” for his wings and i think it adds a really nice texture to our favorite lost angel… assbutt.

31dc supernatural

anyway – last day of 31dc!! yay i made it :)

31dc: day thirty: inspired by a tutorial

i accidentally mixed up my last two days. so while the calendar may say today is the 29th, my nails say it is the 30th. that means tomorrow i will go back in time. did i just invent time travel?

31dc tutoriali may not have invented time travel but i did manage to do a pretty cute manicure. a while back my niece posted this sugar spun tutorial on my facebook page. and i thought today was a great day to try it for myself.

31dc tutoriali started out using sally hansen gunmetal as a base with kbshimmer shade shifter and nicole by opi iceberg lotus as the sugar on top. i really like the way it looks – subtle and a nice texture (that i couldn’t stop touching all day).

31dc tutorial

before i took it off for the night i wanted to try a little bit more just as practice. so i added some strands of kbshimmer pt young thing and spoiled plastic flamingo. i got some big blobby bits with the pink but i actually kinda like that. overall this was definitely a success – i will do this technique again – i already have some ideas for it!

31dc: day twenty eight: inspired by a flag

good morning!! boy, am i ahead of my time! i’ve had these nails done for a little while now (i went to vegas for a few days and cheated on my nail challenge – did multiple mani’s for a few days to get ahead). my real purpose was to have my rainbow flag for PRIDE this weekend. and lo and behold – the supreme court ruling came out while i was wearing these. i let everyone think that i had done it especially for that ;)

31dc flagbut luck just happened to give me the flag prompt during pride month, and on the same day as the san francisco pride parade. and now with gay marriage legal this is the most perfect manicure EVAR!

so as i said i went to vegas with these bad boys – i love how they look in the sun – so sparkly! they did struggle to keep up with my hours in the swimming pool though. i thought the temporary tattoo paper with a gel top coat would be enough to keep them in tip top shape for a while. but sadly that is not the case.

31dc flag

this picture (yay sun and palm trees) was taken only two days after application. womp womp. today looks even worse (i won’t subject you to a picture of them now). but this is my constant struggle with my nails, when not doing a manicure a day challenge i want the designs that i do to last a while. the gel top coat definitely helps but i wish it was more like at the salon. my friends who get their nails did don’t seem to have to mess with them for weeks and they still look good (besides the signs of growth).

31dc: day twenty seven: inspired by artwork

this was a really fun one. the artwork i chose is dr. seuss. his books are so whimsical and happy. they immediately bring you back to a simpler time, when all you had to worry about was why would a fox need to wear socks.

31dc artwork

i decided to pay homage to a few different books through my nails. one fish two fish, green eggs and ham, cat in the hat, horton hears a who and the lorax. the cat in the hat nail gives away the theme but i think horton is my favorite.

31dc artwork

31dc artworkgreen eggs and ham is fun too – this is the second time i’ve done eggs for this challenge! interesting.

31dc: day twenty five: inspired by fashion

i’m not super into fashion. most of the time i only care about it when it decides to change standard styles and causes me not to be able to find clothes i like anymore (like with short shorts or skinny jeans and you either wore them or nothing).
IMG_0029but i do love shoes! these flamingo shoes are one of my favorite pairs. i always get comments when i wear them because they’re so fun and cute. plus they’re actually really comfy – bonus!

IMG_0023
i’ve been saying for a while now that i’m going to paint my nails to match these shoes and this was the perfect prompt to get me to do just that :)

31dc: day twenty four: inspired by a book

okay okay i know this has been done before but i had a lot of trouble thinking of a book to model my nails after. I read A LOT but none of the titles or plots or even jacket art screamed manicurable! plus i was just talking with some friends about what houses we’d be in if we were sorted at hogwarts. did you know there’s an official website that will tell you your house? it’s real in depth and honestly kind of annoying  (you have to create an account – with a legit email tfrom which you must respond- ugh) but I feel like i trust the results ;) IMG_0021 the house scarves were a pretty clear and obvious sign of harry potter, but the little lightning bolt really puts it over the top :) (i’m a slytherin by the way…) colors: spoiled very slimming, kiss silver glitter, spoiled did I die it to blonde, maybelline racing rubies, sally hansen babe blue, essie no more film, sinful colors (yellow?), essie garden variety, spoiled distant memory.

31dc: day twenty two: inspired by a song

b*tch better have my money by rihanna has been stuck in my head for like a month. it’s such a random thing to have in there but rihanna has a way of making songs that just play on repeat in my brain. good for her – that is her job after all. this has been an awkward one though – it’s real weird to just blurt out in the middle of other conversation “bitch better have my money.”

colors: opi green on the runway, sally hansen mint sorbet, kb shimmer PT young thing, sally hansen jumpin jade

31dc: day twenty one: inspired by a tv show

31dc tv showthis is the challenge that i changed. the original was “inspired by a color.” well, i did an entire week of colors and figured i could do something better with a different prompt. there’s quite a few media prompts coming up – but no tv. i thought that was strange. there’s such a wealth of entertainment (good and bad) on the television. actually, i could probably do this whole month with just tv shows! but that’s definitely not going to happen!

31dc tv show

if you can’t tell, the tv show i chose was orphan black if you don’t watch this already, start. like now. it’s okay i’ll wait…

oh good, you’re back. great show right!

31dc tv showtatiana maslany is an amazing actress – i really believe she is all those different people. like sometimes i think, there’s got to be at least two of her. like the olsen twins on full house. but instead of two people playing one, i31dc tv showt’s two people playing ten (or however many there are). that’s the only way my brain can make sense of it.

i think the alison and rachel drawings are the hardest – they look to generic in nail polish form. but the others, sarah, cosima and helena work great, if i do say so myself.

31dc: day twenty: water marble

i tried a few different methods of water marbling this time. i really like water marbling and again, it’s just one of those things i haven’t quite mastered. my colors don’t ever disperse as nice as they do in the youtube tutorials.

31dc watermarblei used my kbshimmer pt young thing for the base coat and sally hansen fuchsia power, gunmetal and invisible for the water marble. on my ring finger i tried the marble without the invisible because when i dropped that in the water it spread out sooo much – reducing the other colors to super thin lines. but when i did it without it completely covered up the holo.

31dc watermarble

i really like my middle finger. this actually came about after i started creating a pattern and it was all sticking to my needle. i gave up and was just swooshing it all around trying to get the needle to pick everything up and thought, hey that’s a better pattern than i get when i’m trying. so maybe not trying is my key to success here ;)

31dc: day nineteen: galaxy

i love galaxy nails. but i’ve done them (and will do them again). so i challenged myself to the planets of my galaxy.

31dc galaxy

31dc galaxy

i don’t know. it’s kinda silly. but kinda cute. i like the sun. i had thought about spacing my fingers out so the spacing between planets was correct, but my fingers are not double jointed, nor removable. so here’s my disclaimer: “planets and their relationship to each other are not to scale.” :)

31dc galaxy

pluto’s cute too. poor little pluto. demoted before he even took a lap around the sun. you’ll always be a planet in our hearts dear pluto.

31dc: day eighteen: half moons

once again i’ve gone literal. i’ve never really done a traditional half moon manicure – but for some reason i didn’t want to start now. this may also have something to do with my idea for tomorrow’s manicure – no spoilers ;)

31dc half moons

this is supposed to be the moon – half full. it sorta looks like it… and the night sky – some clouds – whatever. eh. the moon is glow in the dark though which is pretty fun but also scary when you forget and walk around in the dark.

colors used: covergirl nailslicks deep blue sea, sinfulcolors snow me white, sally hansen lacey lilac, spoiled black mamba.

31dc: day seventeen: glitter

i love glitter. anytime someone asks what my favorite color is, i say glitter. unfortunately i learned a hard lesson about glitter today. it does not like coloring within the lines. i did a tape manicure with glitter and i’ve figured out that the glitter should always be the base coat.

31dc glitter

anytime i pulled the tape up, there was either glitter poking out over the line or peeling up with the tape. i pushed it around enough as it was drying for it to turn out okay, but i definitely learned my lesson today.

colors used: essie coctails & coconut & hors d’oeuvres.

31dc: day sixteen: geometric

on a lot of these 31 day challenges today’s prompt was listed as tribal. i saw someone had changed it on theirs to geometric and i liked that way better. so i followed suit ;)

31dc geometric

31dc geometricmy mani is inspired by piet mondrian – his paintings are so iconic (and geometric!). i love the way his work looks like stained glass.

i started out this mani taping my nails and painting within the lines, then going over it with the black. but i soon realized that that was a lot of unnecessary work. so i just did the black stripes and painted it in. the colors weren’t too opaque that anyone will notice the overlap (except in this macro!)

colors used: wet n wild french white creme, sinful colors yellow (no name on bottle), opi opi red and kiss black striping polish.

Image

31dc: day fifteen: delicate(s)

today’s prompt is delicate print. i decided to do a bustier and some back seam tights. haha get it – because they’re delicates. it’s probably a good thing i think i’m funny – someone’s got to!

31dc delicate

i’m still struggling a bit with stamping. i want it to work so badly but it just doesn’t like me. this corset gave me some trouble – i stamped onto a silicon baking sheet to make a decal that i could transfer. this seems to make more sense right now as i’m trying to perfect my technique because if the stamp doesn’t copy completely or it’s messy or whatever, i don’t have to redo my 31dc delicatepolish i just restamp. which is good, because i had to stamp this one four times before i got one that was filled in and had the details too. the decal method also means that i can get the stamp on pretty straight each time (another thing i struggle with).

overall, i’m happy with this one – simple and clean and a little racy ;)

colors used: orly iron butterfly, essie cocktails & coconuts, opi opi red.

31dc: day fourteen: flowers

i went very straightforward on this design. i wanted to make something with flour instead of flower (one of my favorite movies is stranger than fiction – and if you don’t know what i’m talking about go watch it!) but i couldn’t think of something that would translate well. i thought of things made with flour – like cookies or toast (which would fit my earlier breakfast theme). but i have neither the colors nor the skill to figure out how to paint my nails to look like toast. and i don’t want to resort to my nail tattoos for everything. so i went super simple with sunflowers.

31dc flower

i like my thumb the best. it looks cute off to the corner. i used a dotting tool for the brown/seeds (essie partners in crime) and i also like how some of the yellow (sally hansen mellow yellow) shines through there.

31dc

Image

31dc: day thirteen: animal print

31dc animal printyay! this manicure was the first one i thought of when i looked over this challenge. i was inspired by this beautiful green rose chafer beetle that i’ve owned for quite a while now. i love showing it off because it’s so cool and unusual, but because it’s so tiny people tend to not see it. and it’s a little weird inviting guests over just to see my dead bug.

31dc animal print

this manicure started with opi green on the runway. i then sponged on some rimmel mania and finished with kiss black. i did a few different coats to get the right kind of green and blue layering.

31dc animal printhere you can kind of see the multiple layers of paint. both of these polishes have great color changing qualities when viewed from different light sources. unfortunately that’s really hard to photograph.

this turned out as close as i could hope for. the colors could’ve been brighter but they have just the right color-changing-ness for me!

31dc: day twelve: stripes

31dc stripestoday i just needed a simple design and stripes was the perfect prompt for that. i used painters tape and striping tape to make the stripes different thicknesses.

i really like the gold and grey together. it seems very ritzy.

31dc stripes

if i were to do this manicure again i would make all the stripes go in the same direction. i think the design gets a little lost with all the changes.

31dc: day eleven: dots

today was dots. once again i’ve struggled with this prompt. i want something cool – but dots doesn’t inspire me.

31dc dots

at first i just had a jumble of dots – i was trying to make it look like they were close together and grew further apart. but with such a little canvas this didn’t really work. for the final look i ended up just painting in half of the nail. if i was going to be wearing this mani for more than a day i would have gone on the side that i painted in and put in dots of the lighter blue. i think that would have made me happy with this design. but oh well – on to the next ;

colors used: essie saltwater happy and garden variety

Image

31dc: day 10: gradient

i wanted to do something different for the gradient prompt today. i do a lot of gradients – they’re one of my favorite looks. so i didn’t want today to be just another one like all my others.

31dc gradient

i ended up choosing a color palette that i have a ton of (pink/purple) and doing a linear gradient. so each nail has three different colors going from light to dark, but from pinky to thumb it’s also going light to dark. i used painters tape and didn’t wait long enough so my lines didn’t turn out very crisp.

31dc gradient

my solution was to add a nice silver striping tape. this not only covered up some of the messy lines but really made the different colors stand out. so i used a lot of colors here, bear with me: wet n wild french white créme, sally hansen bubblegum pink, sally hansen fuschia, sally hansen pep-plum, sally hansen posh plum, essie sexy divide, and sally hansen velvet texture deluxe.

31dc: day 9: rainbow

for my rainbow prompt i really wanted to do the balloons from up. i’d seen this manicure a few times before (here are some examples). i should have re-looked at these before doing mine. i went way overboard with the balloons. and the strings. eh.

31dc rainbow

i do really like the base color i used though (essie saltwater happy). to be honest i cheated with that color – i don’t have any / many blues in my collection. this one i painted the base coat while at walgreens today. i’m too cheap for this habit!! i love essie polishes but $8.50 a bottle is killing me! who knows though – i like this one enough i may go buy it anyway.

Image

31dc: day 8: (glam) metal

okay so this prompt originally called for metallic but i just couldn’t get metal out of my mind. at first i was going to do diamond plate, but i couldn’t get the music genre out of my mind. as my mind wandered i eventually ended up with kiss. they’re very iconic and would be easy to recognize (and not super hard to draw).

31dc: day six: violet

for my violet day i thought i would try a new technique. i have a lot of polishes in the purple / violet / pink realm and thought this would be a good day to try a dry marble – since it uses quite a few shades.

31dc violet

sorry about all the macros lately – i just made a homemade lightbox and all the macros turn out so well when it’s nicely lit!

31dc violet

colors used in this design: spoiled kickin’ the habit went on as an overall color base, sinful colors frenzy was used as my wet base to which kbshimmer shade shifter and nicole by opi show you care were added before swirling the all together.

31dc: day five: blue

once again i am a fair-weather fan. the warriors won again last night and this city is pretty excited – it’s hard not to get caught up in that.

31dc blue

for this mani i used my trusty ol’ temporary tattoo paper. i knew there was no way i was going to get anywhere near the warriors logo so played it safe. i had thought about just doing their colors but decided if i can’t challenge myself during this 31dc – i never will.

31dc blue

my middle finger is painted to look like a basketball using china glaze unplugged and spoiled don’t be cheesy. unfortunately when i went to put in the texture of the bball it covered a lot of the rubber lines that i had drawn in. i like this macro shot because you can still see them :)

31dc blue

here’s another macro shot – so pretty! as you can see – even with the printer not all of the logo showed up. on the three nonaccent nails i used a really pretty new textured polish lots of lux by essie.

31dc blue

one last picture. i am very happy with this mani. and so timely too!

31dc

Image

31dc: day four: green

i’m not a big weed smoker, but when the green prompt came up that’s all i could think of! i think it has something to do with all the dispensaries around here. the green cross. haha.

31dc green

i started out with base coats of my beautiful holo pt young thing from kbshimmer and green on the runway from opi.

31dc green

with a striping brush i painted on the marijuana leaves in opposite colors of the base coat. i worship this macro shot – all the rainbow!!!

31dc green

alas i have already painted over this manicure. it lasted about 3 hours. but i have to work tomorrow and i don’t think anyone would be fooled by me saying it’s supposed to be a star ;)

31dc

Image

31dc: day three: yellow

today’s challenge was yellow. ugh. i don’t usually do yellow. so i wanted to something unusual, for this unusual (to me) color. at first i thought about painting my nails like twinkies. (if anyone has tried this please let me know – i would love to know how it turned out!) but that seemed hard. i mean, how do you replicate a yellow sponge cake tube with white creme inside. it’s essentially one blob inside another. well, technically so is the design i ended up with. but i think it’s a little more recognizable. and hey, with yesterdays’ design and this one you have a pretty good start to breakfast! maybe for red i should’ve done bacon!!

colors used: sinful colors snow me white and sally hansen mellow yellow.

31dc

Image

31DC: day two: orange

i couldn’t think of anything but oranges for the orange day two challenge. i’m sure there are many things that are orange and many patterns i could’ve done, but i couldn’t get the literal oranges out of my head.

31dc orange

i started with a base coat of sally hansen mellow yellow. using striping tape i blocked out the orange slices. the ring and thumb were mean to be the whole orange and the others are wedges. i really like this yellow and green combo though! next i applied a coat of spoiled don’t be cheesy and removed the striping tape.

31dc orange

what’s funny is that i accidentally touched one of my fingers before it dried and left a fingerprint. i was really upset thinking i would have to do that finger over. but – lo and behold – the fingerprint made it look textured like a pulpy orange! perfecto. so i went around to all my other fingers and smushed my fingerprints into each. when they were pretty wet they took the texture really well but as they dried it naturally flattened itself out. so i had to keep smushing until they dried. pretty cool!

31dc: day one: red

I’m going to have a go at this 31 day challenge. i don’t really know if there’s supposed to be any rhyme or reason to when this challenge happens but i need some inspiration right now and hopefully this is how it’ll happen.

day one’s challenge is red. this is a hard color for me not to just think of love and sappy stuff. as i was pondering what things are red i thought of a flannel blanket – those are red!

31dc red

so i started off with a nude base coat (essie cocktails and coconuts). after that dried i applied strips of painters tape. and painted over my nails in red (wet n wild red a good book).

31dc red

i finished the look with some thin stripes in kiss spa12 black. they turned out really cute. i think the black stands out too much in my opinion.

31dc red

i really love this macro shot! it looks like a painting :) well i guess it is technically a painting. also here is the artwork i created for my 31dc challenge. all the ones i found online were branded somebody else so i figured that meant i needed to make my own too! (this also let me change one – i’ll say which one when i get to it).

31dc
